American gymnastics icon Gabby Douglas withdrew from the U.S. gymnastics championships in Fort Worth, Texas this weekend after suffering an ankle injury during her training this week.

Douglas, speaking to ESPN on Wednesday, opened up her plans that will end her bid to make the American gymnastics competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris this July.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist announced back in February that she would be making one more attempt at Olympic gold by returning to competitive gymnastics.

Had the 28-year-old made the team, she would have been the oldest American woman to compete in Olympic gymnastics since 1952.

“I love this sport and I love pushing my limits,” Douglas told ESPN while also expressing pride in what she’s accomplished during her 18-month comeback to the sport.

“I hope I can inspire both my peers and the next generation of gymnasts that age is just a number, and you can accomplish anything you work hard for.”

Douglas is one of the sport’s most decorated athletes and became the first black gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title in 2012 in London.

She competed for the first time in eight years this April when she took part in the American Classic.

She qualified to compete at the U.S. championships, but during the U.S. Classic in Hartford, Connecticut in mid-May,  Douglas struggled on the bars and withdrew from the competition without specifics as to why.

While Douglas’ hopes of making this year’s Olympic squad are over, she is now setting her sights on the 2028 games in Los Angeles.

“It would be such an honor to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics,” she told ESPN.

Douglas will be 32 when the Summer Olympics take place in LA four years from now.
