New York soccer fans will get an in-depth look at one of the biggest moments in the Hudson River Derby’s history as part of a new Apple TV+ docuseries.
“Onside: Major League Soccer” is set to debut Friday ahead of the start of the MLS’ 30th season, and it gives viewers an “unprecedented” look into the 2024 season.
Included in the show is the first-ever New York Red Bulls-New York City FC playoff showdown from November.
The fifth episode of the series will focus on the metro area’s two MLS clubs and the rivalry that has developed since NYCFC began play in the league in 2015.
“Who runs NYC? A case is made in the Hudson River Derby’s playoff debut. RBNY’s rising star John Tolkin feels the heat of the spotlight,” an episode description reads.
The episode will feature interviews with NYCFC and Red Bulls front office figures such as Red Bulls general manager Marc de Grandpre and NYCFC CEO Brad Sims.
Former NYCFC coach Nick Cushing also appeared in a teaser for the episode.
“If Red Bull own us then they must own our star because it’s the only way they’re going to get one,” Cushing said in the teaser, referencing the star on NYCFC’s jerseys commemorating their 2021 MLS Cup title.
In another part of the trailer, Sims mentioned that inside the club, they joke that the Red Bulls are “New Jersey’s team” and that NYCFC is “the only team that’s New York City.”
A release indicated that Red Bulls star Emil Forsberg will also be heavily featured.
The Red Bulls ended up toppling NYCFC in the conference semifinals at Citi Field on their run to the MLS Cup Final, where they fell to the LA Galaxy.
The playoff meeting had been a highly anticipated affair, and in what ended up being a correct prediction, former Red Bulls star and current MLS commentator Bradley Wright-Phillips said the winner would advance to the MLS Cup.
“I think people should understand what this is: This is two teams clashing for a chance to be in the MLS Cup, two teams that hate each other,” he told The Post.
