Emma Raducanu wasn’t going to miss her favorite tournament even after the harrowing experience she had last month when a fan exhibited “fixated behavior” toward her during the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Raducanu, 22, is competing in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, which began earlier this week, and told reporters Tuesday that she was in California “because I feel a lot better now.”

“A lot happened obviously after Dubai, so I just needed to kind of take my time after. I think the allure of Indian Wells being my favorite tournament, I just couldn’t really step away from it,” Raducanu told reporters.

The 2021 U.S. Open champion had a visceral reaction last month when she spotted the creepy fan in the stands of her second-round match against Karolina Muchova in Dubai and hid behind the umpire’s chair before security removed the man in question.

Raducanu told reporters Tuesday that the February incident left her “very distraught” and she was saying to herself in that moment, “I don’t know how I’m going to finish.”

“I literally couldn’t see the ball through the tears, I could barely breathe,” she continued. “I was playing Karolina, who’s like top 17 in the world or something, and I can’t see the ball. Then the first four games kind of ran away from me because I was not on the court, to be honest. I’m not really sure how I regrouped.”

Pretty scary situation when a stalker turns up at your match. Raducanu did well to finish given how rattled she was.pic.twitter.com/aQJB43BTVv https://t.co/uYSjpU3ZZk— John Dean (@JohnDean_) February 19, 2025

It was not her first brush with an overzealous fan during her career, which included a scary stalker incident in 2022 when she had to file a restraining order against an obsessed former Amazon delivery driver who stalked at her home in London.

But Raducanu insisted she wouldn’t let those people get in the way of her passion for tennis.

“There’s a part of you that thinks, ‘I’m not gonna let a middle-aged creep stop me doing what I love to do,’” she said.

The British tennis star has beefed up security with her at Indian Wells.

While she spoke to media members, The Athletic noted that she had two security guards standing nearby her and that they’d be with her throughout her run in the tournament.

She also has other security when she’s not at the tournament.

But she did admit her day-to-day life has been impacted after the Dubai incident.

“I wasn’t really going out much,” she said. “I didn’t know if I was going to be ready and the last thing I wanted to do was play if I wasn’t ready,” Raducanu said.

She added the support she’s received from her fans has “been great.”
