A man who “exhibited fixated behavior” first approached Raducanu in public on Monday, with the Daily Mail further reporting that the man gave her a letter while at her hotel.
One day later, during the first set of her round of 32 matchup against Muchova, Raducanu halted play.
The 2021 U.S. Open champion seemed clearly distraught while she headed toward the umpire’s chair before moving behind it, while the umpire talked into what appeared to be a walkie talkie.
Muchova then approached the area and talked to the umpire, before seemingly checking on Raducanu.
Raducanu, the world’s 61st-ranked player, later wiped away tears before the match resumed, with Muchova winning in straight sets.
The male had been seen in the first few rows and ejected, per the WTA, and will be banned from all WTA events “pending a threat assessment.”
“Player safety is our top priority, and tournaments are advised on security best practices for international sporting events,” the WTA’s statement read. “The WTA is actively working with Emma and her team to ensure her well-being and provide any necessary support. We remain committed to collaborating with tournaments and their security teams worldwide to maintain a safe environment for all players.”
Raducanu dealt with a similar scary situation approximately three years ago when Amrit Magar, then 35, stalked the then-19-year-old Raducanu and received a five-year restraining order after being arrested.
He arrived at Raducanu’s home three times, leaving a hand-drawn map and a bouquet of flowers on separate occasions, per BBC.
The Daily Mail reported this new “fixated” person is not believed to be of British nationality and thus not connected to the previous situation.
