Another interesting wrinkle may be developing amid speculation linking Deion Sanders to the open Cowboys head coaching job.
Sanders is still the head coach at the University of Colorado, but he has confirmed that he had spoken to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in relation to the NFL coaching job.
But now there is an added twist after NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that Colorado was putting up “resistance” to a request from Sanders about adding NIL and staff resources.
“Two people with knowledge of the situation tell me Sanders approached Colorado AD Rick George Tuesday about additional money for NIL and his staff,” she reported on X. “He was met with resistance. The University of Colorado would neither confirm or deny the information when I reached out. Deion Sanders didn’t respond when reached multiple times for comment.”
Sanders is coming off a season in which he led the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record — and 7-2 in conference play — in 2024.
The sincerity in the potential interest between Sanders and the Cowboys is unclear and various reports have indicated different things.
WFAA’s Ed Werder reported on X that Sanders “would almost certainly accept if Jerry Jones offers to make him the next Cowboys head coach.”
However, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini said during an appearance on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz” that she thought it was “all smoke.”
“Everyone’s kind of wink-winking this thing. I don’t think the Dallas Cowboys had a plan,” Russini said. “I think they felt this would work out with Mike McCarthy. Mike McCarthy’s like, ‘Nah, I’m good. This isn’t what I want in terms of a contract.’ He walks. Jerry [Jones]’s left going, ‘Alright, I gotta go find a head coach.’”
For his part, Sanders has said that the call from Jones was “intriguing” but that he loves “Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
However, he did not outright deny interest in the position.
