MONTREAL — Already, Team Canada is down a man.
Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore will miss the rest of the 4 Nations Face-Off after suffering an apparent right wrist injury early in the second period of Canada’s 4-3 overtime victory over Sweden, coach Jon Cooper said.
That means Travis Sanheim — who was an extra Wednesday — will be in the lineup the rest of the way, with Canada down to six defensemen.
For the time being, Canada is not allowed to bring in another player, meaning that is a permanent state of play barring more injuries.
“That’s a big blow,” Cooper said. “What a kid and only played six minutes. Heart’s breaking for the kid. He was the first one in there hugging everybody.
“It’s a tough one to swallow because you just know how much it means. He got to touch the ice, get some time in there, but it was tough. The speed of that game, to play through the last [40] minutes without a defenseman, that’s a grind.”
Indeed, being without Theodore for most of the game meant heavy minutes for the rest of Canada’s defense corps, namely the top pair of Devon Toews and Cale Makar, who played 28:06 and 25:53 apiece, respectively.
That took its toll as Sweden chipped away at a 3-1 lead to force overtime.
“I thought it hurt us a lot,” Connor McDavid said. “He’s a great player and it’s tough. You guys saw the pace tonight, we felt the pace and it’s tough on those D. To play five, we defended maybe a little too much, but those five D grinded. They did a great job.”
It’s unclear as of now whether Sanheim will slot into Theodore’s spot alongside Drew Doughty or Cooper will revamp his pairs. Canada has two practice days before its second match of the tournament Saturday night against Team USA.
The reviews were mixed for the 10-minute overtime format, with Nathan MacKinnon saying he had no interest whatsoever in importing it for the NHL’s regular season.
“Maybe seven,” he said. “I can’t believe I looked off Connor on that rush [a two-on-one in overtime]. I could barely see I was so tired on that rush. I was happy when Marner scored. I didn’t have much left to give.”
