Belief in the Ukrainian president has seen a slight dip, with 52% of Ukrainians feeling confident, 39% expressing distrust and 9% undecided, according to a survey conducted in December by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
ADVERTISEMENTAs Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is nearing the three-year mark, trust in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at home has declined slightly, latest survey shows.According to data gathered by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) in December, 52% of Ukrainians remained confident in Zelenskyy and his leadership, 39% showed distrust, and 9% were undecided. The poll shows that while trust levels have worsened over the past year, the balance in the Ukrainian leader’s favour remains positive at +13%. The KIIS poll also shows the dynamic over the course of last year: at the end of 2023, 77% of Ukrainians trusted the president. By February 2024, trust had fallen to 64%, and by May 2024, it had dropped further to 59%, with the share of those expressing distrust increasing from 22% to 36% for the same period. The numbers stabilised by October, but trust levels declined again between October and December. This drop was attributed more to increased uncertainty among respondents about Ukraine’s future rather than outright distrust in its leadership.Interestingly, almost every drop coincided with certain events that might have had an impact. According to KIIS, Zelenskyy’s approval ratings dropped by about five percentage points after General Valerii Zaluzhnyi stepped down as commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces in February 2024.Then in April, right before the May poll trust drop, Zelenskyy signed an unpopular mobilisation law, lowering the draft age from 27 to 25 and simplifying the identification of conscripts nationwide. The autumn drop in trust ratings coincided with a massive Russian offensive in the east of Ukraine, with Pokrovsk and Kurakhove being the primary targets. Over the course of autumn, Russian forces have been pushing with a pace and pressure unseen since the early days of the full-scale invasion. The latest poll was conducted using telephone interviews, KIIS stated. A random sample of mobile phone numbers was selected from all regions of Ukraine (the territory controlled by the government of Ukraine), interviewing a total of 2,000 respondents. KIIS also points out that trust in the president is “much more strongly linked not to the region of residence, but to the level of optimism.” KIIS previously published the results of a survey on how optimistic Ukrainians are about the future and how they assess unity in society.According to one classification, 50% of Ukrainians are either consistent or relatively consistent optimists, while 23% are consistent or relatively consistent pessimists. The remaining 27% have conflicting or uncertain views on the future and unity of Ukrainians.Additional sources • KIIS
