Baty is the better defender among the two, with Vientos’ defense being a question mark throughout his career, but the Mets are opting for the better-performing player.
“This is a tough one. There’s no easy solution here,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said recently about the looming roster decision. “I do think we have two players who deserve to be in the big leagues, and that’s why they’re both here right now.
“I’ve also been consistent that this present roster construction cannot last in perpetuity. At some point we’re going to have to get slightly more conventional. But we have two guys who I think have demonstrated they really deserve to be in the big leagues.”
Scott, a rookie, is being demoted after a strong five-game stretch in which he posted a 3.27 ERA, including Thursday’s five-inning, two-run effort against the Diamondbacks.
His demotion is expected to be short, per The Post’s Joel Sherman.
The Mets are taking advantage of three off days in the first 10 days of June, thanks to the upcoming London series against the Phillies to help limit Scott’s innings.
Scott has thrown 53 innings combining his time in the majors and minors.
The team also wanted to avoid using a six-man rotation and opted for bullpen depth in the upcoming stretch, according to Sherman.
