Starling Marte was scratched with a knee issue that Mendoza said the Mets were not particularly concerned about.
Marte reported to manager Carlos Mendoza following Tuesday’s win that he “felt something” in his right knee during the seventh inning.
Mendoza penciled Marte back into the lineup and put him in right field Wednesday before Marte said he was “still feeling it,” Mendoza said.
“Let’s not take a chance here,” Mendoza said before the Mets’ 9-1 win over the Nationals. “Go back, get treatment.”
Tyrone Taylor was inserted into right field and went 1-for-4 with a triple.
Losing Marte’s bat was a loss for the Mets. Over his past six games, Marte is 10-for-22 with three walks, two doubles and six RBIs.
Francisco Alvarez went 0-for-3 with a walk serving as DH with High-A Brooklyn on Wednesday.
The rehabbing catcher is set to join Triple-A Syracuse and catch back-to-back full games on Friday and Saturday before DH’ing Sunday in his final tuneup before a major league return.
Alvarez caught a combined no-hitter with Brooklyn on Tuesday.
“Pretty cool,” said Mendoza, who talked with Alvarez after the game. “He was very excited about it. Got some reports from the coaches down there and the first thing they said was like, ‘What a special guy.’
“He was invested, talking to the whole pitching staff before the game and as the game went on. His energy and obviously the way he called that game.”
Edwin Diaz, who threw a 21-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, “felt good” Wednesday, Mendoza said.
Diaz, who is shelved with a right shoulder impingement, is expected to throw an inning with High-A Brooklyn on Thursday.
The Mets added catcher Joe Hudson to the 40-man roster, which would allow the veteran who was playing with Triple-A Syracuse to be brought on the active roster when the Mets are allowed a 27th man in London.
The Mets also will bring righty Cole Sulser and Brett Baty across the pond.
Their 27th man has to be a position player, so it will be either Baty or Hudson.
Sulser will be around in case an injury creates an opening on the pitching staff.
Omar Narvaez and Jorge López, who were designated for assignment last week, were released.
Righty Shintaro Fujinami (right shoulder strain) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
