Sterling Braden experienced the difficulty of securing a stable job after being convicted of a felony at the age of 18. This led him to create Friend a Felon, an app designed to help formerly incarcerated individuals find jobs and housing in areas that do not discriminate against ex-offenders. The app has since expanded to a web version to make it easier for employers to utilize. Braden plans to add features in the future that can assist with paperwork for users.

Research shows that providing stable job opportunities for individuals with criminal records can reduce recidivism rates. Braden believes that ex-offenders are hardworking individuals who simply lack opportunities. He emphasizes that given a good opportunity and decent wage, these individuals will remain loyal to their job. The app has successfully connected over 13,400 formerly incarcerated individuals with resources such as jobs, housing, and financial assistance.

Cleveland is also home to a coordinated effort by the Cuyahoga County Office of Re-Entry to improve opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals. Through collaboration with various organizations, this initiative aims to support successful reintegration and reduce recidivism rates in the community.

Despite his lack of business experience, Braden was determined to make his app idea a reality. He spent time learning how to build an app during the pandemic and developed the first version in March 2021. Initially facing challenges in finding employers willing to hire individuals with criminal records, Braden adopted a new strategy using social media to connect with companies.

Braden’s lack of business or sales experience presented a hurdle in promoting his app. However, after receiving mentorship and support from gener8tor, a VC firm and accelerator, he was able to establish a for-profit venture and secure funding from the Miami University Social Impact Fund. His business model involves a tiered pricing structure based on company size, with fees ranging from $300 to $800 monthly.

Braden’s determination and commitment to providing opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals have been instrumental in the success of Friend a Felon. He remains dedicated to his mission, even turning down funding offers that required him to change the name of the app. Despite potential objections to the term “felon,” Braden believes in providing opportunities and support to those who need it most.
