Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is set to make an appearance during the total solar eclipse on April 8, potentially visible with the naked eye. However, the comet will not block the eclipse as it will be on the other side of the sun relative to Earth. This can be confirmed by using The Sky Live’s 3D rendering of the comet’s position in the solar system, showing it will be 1.6 astronomical units away from Earth during the event.

The comet’s distance and position relative to Earth make it impossible for it to block the view of the eclipse, as it would have to be closer to Earth than the moon to do so. Despite potentially reaching a magnitude of 5, making it visible in a dark night sky, it is unlikely to be seen during totality, which only lasts a few minutes and does not become pitch black. Photographers may have a better chance of spotting the comet in their long-exposure images.

During totality, the comet will be near Jupiter, making it easier for observers to locate. With a diameter of 18 miles, the comet orbits the sun every 71 years and was first spotted in 1812. Its nickname comes from an outburst in 2023 when it brightened dramatically and appeared to have “horns” protruding from its nucleus. Despite the potential sighting, it is recommended to have clear skies and sharp eyes to catch a glimpse of this rare visitor to the inner solar system.

In conclusion, while comet 12P/Pons-Brooks may be visible during the upcoming total solar eclipse, it will not obstruct the view of the event as it will be positioned on the other side of the sun relative to Earth. Even though it may reach a magnitude of 5, making it potentially visible to the naked eye in a dark sky, it is unlikely to be seen during totality which only lasts a few minutes. Photographers may have a better chance of capturing the comet in their long-exposure images, especially since it will be located near Jupiter during the event. Be sure to keep an eye out for this rare celestial event during the total solar eclipse on April 8.
