In recent months, five Americans have been detained in the Turks and Caicos Islands for violating a law that prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition. Ryan Watson, Sharitta Grier, and Bryan Hagerich are three of them who formed a close bond while living together at an Airbnb on the island, awaiting their sentencing. Watson and Grier were arrested after ammunition was found in their bags at the airport, leading to a minimum 12-year prison sentence threat.

Watson described his arrest as a moment of disbelief turning into pleading and then relief, as his wife was also briefly detained due to a mix-up with their luggage. Grier, who was also arrested for possession of ammunition, faced a traumatic experience while being handcuffed to a chair due to a lack of available cells. However, Watson and others came together to support each other through this challenging ordeal, forming an unlikely fraternity of support during their time at the Airbnb.

All the Americans are out on bail and have pleaded guilty except for Grier, who has not entered a plea. Lawmakers have tried to facilitate their release by sending a delegation to the islands, acknowledging the strict penalties in place for possessing firearms and ammunition. Despite the severity of the situation, the sentencing judge does have some discretion to impose fair and just sentences based on the circumstances of each case, rather than the mandatory minimum.

The household is eagerly awaiting Hagerich’s sentencing, hoping that it will shed some light on their own cases. Their shared experience has brought them closer together, providing mutual support and comfort during this challenging time. Watson and Grier have formed a strong bond, with Watson even offering Grier his bedroom for her comfort. Through their prayers and support for each other, they are navigating the darkness of this episode together.

Premier Washington Misick reiterated that no American has been sentenced to the full 12 years, highlighting that the penalty was increased from seven years during the country’s crackdown on guns and ammunition. The Americans’ upcoming court dates are spread out over the next few months, as they await their fate. Despite the uncertainty of their situations, they find solace in the camaraderie and support they provide each other, making the people in their circle better than the place they find themselves in.
