Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud, a member of the al-Qaeda-linked group Ansar al-Din, was convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Mali. His crimes, which took place between 2012 and 2013 in the city of Timbuktu, included torture, rape, sexual slavery, and the destruction of religious and historic buildings. Al Hassan faces the possibility of life imprisonment when his sentence is handed down at a later date.

During his time as the police chief in Timbuktu, Al Hassan was accused of personally overseeing amputations and floggings. Prosecutors claimed that women and girls suffered greatly under Ansar al-Din’s regime, facing corporal punishment, imprisonment, and forced marriages to fighters. Some victims were raped multiple times, and Al Hassan was said to be personally involved in the flogging of women accused of adultery. The trial revealed the extent of the violence and fear endured by the citizens of Timbuktu during Al Hassan’s tenure.

In his defense, Al Hassan’s lawyer argued that he was simply following the decisions of the Islamic tribunal as a member of the Islamic police force. However, prosecutors painted a different picture, describing the reign of terror inflicted by Ansar al-Din on the people of Timbuktu. Victims of the group’s crimes are now awaiting possible compensation, hoping for a judgement that will deliver justice. Al Hassan’s conviction marks the second trial at the ICC for a Malian leader involved in the destruction of religious sanctuaries in Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The trial, which began in 2020, brought to light the atrocities committed by Al Hassan and his group, shedding light on the impact of their actions on the people of Timbuktu. The ICC’s decision to convict him on multiple charges sends a message that such crimes will not go unpunished. Al Hassan’s role in overseeing torture, rape, and the destruction of religious sites has had lasting effects on the victims and the community. The verdict is a step towards accountability for those responsible for violations of human rights and international law.

Al Hassan’s conviction is a victory for the victims of his crimes and a signal to other perpetrators that they will be held accountable for their actions. The ICC’s work in prosecuting individuals like Al Hassan helps to bring justice to those who have suffered at the hands of war criminals and perpetrators of crimes against humanity. As the people of Timbuktu await the sentencing of Al Hassan, they continue to hope for a judgement that will provide them with closure and a sense of justice. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals responsible for their actions and ensuring that justice is served for victims of heinous crimes.
