Michael Huppe, President & CEO of SoundExchange, is advocating for a principles-based approach to ensure that artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry supports creators. He believes that AI has the potential to nurture the creative process for artists, but only if regulatory directives are in place to protect their interests. Huppe emphasizes the need for clear ways to support creators, who are the heart and soul of the industry, amidst the emergence of new platforms and technologies.
Over the past year, creators have successfully experimented with AI, using tools like BandLab Songstarter to overcome writer’s block and come up with new ideas. AI has also been used to help artists like Paul McCartney and the K-pop group MIDNATT in creating new music. However, there are concerns about the technology potentially marginalizing creators by replacing them with AI engines, which could impact middle-class musicians such as session players and producers.
One major concern is the unauthorized use of intellectual property through AI, leading to federal lawsuits and questions about copyright laws. Huppe believes that AI companies and platforms should obtain consent from artists and rights holders, give creators credit for their contributions, and ensure fair compensation when their content is used. He stresses the importance of aligning around the three Cs of music and AI: consent, credit, and compensation, as a way to move forward in a constructive manner.
Huppe recommends that the music industry embrace AI technology responsibly, highlighting the Human Artistry Campaign where over 170 organizations from 34 countries have signed on to principles supporting artists’ rights. The campaign recognizes the value of AI as a tool for artists but asserts that it can never replace human expression, creativity, and artistry. By ensuring that creators remain at the center of music, Huppe believes that artists will find innovative ways to leverage AI tools to create new and amazing works.
As a member of the Forbes Business Council, Huppe is focused on the growth and networking opportunities for business owners and leaders. He urges the music industry to find a constructive way to incorporate AI technology while prioritizing the interests of creators. By aligning around the three Cs and supporting principles for responsible AI use, artists can seize the potential of AI tools to enhance their creative process and produce remarkable works in the future.
