Italy is set to launch two new cost-effective night train routes this summer, providing an alternative mode of transport for travellers. The new high-speed Frecciarossa services will connect Milan to Lecce in southern Puglia and Reggio di Calabria in Calabria. The Milan to Lecce train will take just over nine hours, departing at 10.45pm and arriving at 7.57am, with tickets starting at €29.90 one way. The Milan to Reggio di Calabria train will take nearly 11 hours, departing at 9.20pm and arriving at 8.11am, with tickets starting at €39.90.
Both new routes offer a faster and more affordable alternative to existing sleeper trains that run the same routes. Despite the attractive prices, there are some drawbacks to these new night trains. There are no couchettes or cabins available, meaning passengers will have to sit upright for the entire journey. Additionally, there is no dining car on the train, though a bar with snacks, sandwiches, and drinks is available. Passengers can opt for Business class for comfier seats, free WiFi, and free snacks for an additional fee.
Travellers on the Milan to Lecce route will have the opportunity to explore the charming city of Lecce in Puglia, known for its honey-hued Baroque buildings and ornate structures like the cathedral and Basilica di Santa Croce. Local restaurants serve traditional dishes like fried aubergine balls and orecchiette pasta with turnip tops. On the other hand, passengers on the Milan to Reggio di Calabria route will arrive in the historic city of Reggio di Calabria, home to the famous Riace Bronzes and a variety of spicy dishes like ‘nduja pork sausage spread and piquant pecorino cheese.
The new night trains are part of a growing trend towards more sustainable and stress-free travel options, with night trains becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to flying. While high prices have previously made night trains unaffordable for many travellers, the launch of these new routes in Italy aims to make overnight travel more accessible and affordable. The trains offer a convenient way to travel the length of Italy, connecting major cities in the north with destinations in the south, allowing passengers to wake up in two of southern Italy’s most beautiful cities. Tickets for these new routes start at around half the price of existing sleeper trains, making them a cost-effective option for budget-conscious travellers.
