Amazon’s Project Kuiper has partnered with Lake Washington Institute of Technology to create a certificate program for satellite technicians, showcasing the efforts being made to develop a skilled workforce. Maloney suggested the creation of an incubator specific to the space industry to further support startups and innovation. Several accelerators and venture studios focused on the space industry are already in operation, with plans for more to come. The region’s history in the tech industry, dating back to Boeing’s work on the lunar rover during the Apollo missions, has laid the foundation for its leadership in the space industry.

Mike Fong, director of the Washington State Department of Commerce, highlighted the state’s commercial space ventures, which account for billions in economic activity and thousands of jobs. The Seattle area’s unique DNA and history in the tech industry have positioned it as a leader in the emerging space economy. Despite the challenges posed by the affordability crisis, there is optimism about the future of the space industry in the region. With continued investment in housing, education, and workforce development, the Seattle area is poised to remain a hub for innovation in the space industry. The collaboration between government, businesses, and educational institutions is key to supporting the growth and success of the industry in the region.
