A mysterious ailment causing fish in the Florida Keys to spin in circles has sparked a frantic race to find the cause and save an endangered species before it’s too late. Scientists suspect that toxins from algae colonizing the seafloor may be the reason behind the neurological issues in some fish species. Fishermen initially noticed the bizarre behavior in October, with reports of upside-down stingrays and lemon sharks whirling violently in the mud. The critically endangered smalltooth sawfish has been particularly affected, with at least 47 deaths reported.

An emergency response was launched in early April to rescue afflicted sawfish, involving government agencies and nonprofit partners. Scientists are working to determine what is causing the widespread distress for marine life. Recent tests have identified a cocktail of natural toxins in both seawater and the tissues of some fish. However, it is believed that this episode does not represent a complete collapse of the ecosystem, as other important species seem to be largely unaffected.

Florida lawmakers have allocated funds for fish research in the Keys, which will aid scientists in their quest to unravel the cause of the distressing fish behavior.
