Filmmaker and veteran war photographer Olivier Sarbil introduced a unique and impactful film called Viktor at the Toronto International Film Festival. The documentary follows the life of a Deaf Ukrainian man named Viktor Korotovskyi, who has a strong desire to help defend his country during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sarbil, who lost half his hearing in Libya, was drawn to Viktor’s story and wanted to explore the world through the perspective of a Deaf individual. He connected with Viktor online and built a strong relationship with him using visual aids, Google Translate, lip reading, basic sign language, and a Ukrainian field producer to help tell his story.

The black-and-white cinematography and sounds in Viktor were meant to mimic how Viktor hears the world, creating a powerful experience for the audience. Sarbil wanted the film to consistently be connected to Viktor’s point of view, including his longing to join the Ukrainian forces. Viktor’s deep desire to contribute to defending his homeland against the Russian invasion due to stories he grew up hearing from his father adds a layer of complexity to the narrative. Sarbil emphasized the importance of staying focused on Viktor’s story and his purpose throughout the film.

Filming in Ukraine during a time of war presented constant challenges for Sarbil and his crew, as access was difficult to navigate with ever-changing circumstances. The stressful environment required flexibility and a level of bravery to operate effectively in war-torn regions. Despite the challenges, the remarkable people they encountered, including soldiers who assisted them, contributed to a successful filming experience. A powerful and emotional moment in Viktor occurs when Viktor speaks to a soldier who lost his hearing, offering words of encouragement and expressing solidarity with the Deaf community.

Sarbil expressed hope that Viktor would raise awareness for the Deaf community during times of conflict, highlighting the importance of embracing differences and finding purpose and fulfillment. The film not only sheds light on the experiences of Deaf individuals in war zones but also shows the resilience and determination of those who seek to make a difference in challenging circumstances. With its focus on Viktor’s story and his desire to defend his country, Viktor serves as a reminder of the often-overlooked voices and perspectives within marginalized communities impacted by war. Through Viktor’s journey, Sarbil brings attention to the strength and courage of individuals like Viktor who strive to overcome obstacles and make a meaningful impact in the world.
