Former President Donald Trump is facing legal troubles from several criminal trials and civil penalties. Following his conviction in Manhattan for a hush money case, Trump still faces three other criminal trials and is appealing losses in three financially devastating civil cases. With 54 criminal counts across three cases in separate states, Trump could potentially face over a century in prison if convicted on all charges. None of the remaining cases have scheduled trial dates yet and are likely to occur after the upcoming presidential election.
In one of the cases, Trump is facing 40 felony charges in Florida federal court for hoarding classified and top-secret documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate after leaving office, obstructing the feds from recovering the records, and attempting to cover it up. Additional charges were brought against Trump for ordering surveillance footage at his Palm Beach club to be scrubbed following a visit by investigators. If convicted on all counts in this case, Trump could face 450 years in prison.
Following the January 6 Capitol Riot, Trump was hit with four felony charges in Washington, D.C. federal court. Prosecutors allege that Trump tried to overturn his loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 election by making false statements about voter fraud, leading to the violent Capitol Riot. Charges include defrauding the US government, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, and obstruction of an official proceeding. If convicted, Trump could face up to 55 years in prison.
In another case in Fulton County, Georgia, Trump faces 13 charges for allegedly conspiring to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results. This case was prompted by a call Trump had with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which Trump allegedly asked him to “find” enough votes to change the election outcome. Trump is charged with violating the state’s anti-racketeering law, conspiracy, making false statements, and other offenses. If convicted, he could face up to 76.5 years behind bars.
Trump is also appealing over $500 million in civil judgments in New York and facing civil cases related to allegations of sexual assault and defamation. In the New York Attorney General’s civil business fraud case, Trump faces a $455 million judgment for inflating his assets on financial statements. He also faces judgments in two cases by E. Jean Carroll related to her claims of sexual assault and defamation by Trump. Trump has filed notices of appeal in the Carroll cases and plans to appeal the AG’s case, denying all claims and charges as part of a “witch hunt” orchestrated by Democrats to prevent his reelection.
