The Chandler Sports Precinct in Brisbane is set to undergo a major upgrade, funded by the federal and state governments’ $1.87 billion minor venues program. The improvements will include a new indoor sports hall, enhancements to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, and overall precinct improvements such as better access, lighting, and gathering spaces. Tenders for the construction work have been released, with over 70 businesses attending a recent project briefing. State Development and Infrastructure Minister Grace Grace highlighted that the upgrades at Chandler will solidify its status as Queensland’s premier multi-sports hub for community and elite-level sports.

The work at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre will involve various upgrades such as seat replacement, external cladding, roof remediation, and improvements to lighting and public announcement systems. Swimming Queensland chief executive Kevin Hasemann emphasized the importance of these improvements in ensuring the continuation of swimming’s legacy at the venue, which has been the training ground for numerous Olympic champions. The enhancements are aimed at attracting more elite athletes and providing top-notch facilities for both community and competitive use well before the arrival of international guests for the 2032 Games.

With almost half of Brisbane 2032’s minor venues expected to be out to market by the end of 2024, the upgrades at Chandler are scheduled to commence in 2025 and be completed by 2027 – five years ahead of the Games. The Australian Swimming Trials, serving as the selection meet for the Dolphins team competing at Paris 2024, will be held at Chandler from June 10 to 15. These developments are part of the broader preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games, showcasing Brisbane’s commitment to delivering high-quality sports facilities and infrastructure for athletes and the community.

The venue upgrades at Chandler are part of a broader strategy to enhance Queensland’s sporting facilities and infrastructure, showcasing the state’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles and fostering excellence in sports. The improvements at Chandler will not only benefit elite athletes but also provide a hub for the local community to engage in various sporting activities. The funding from the federal and state governments’ minor venues program will create job opportunities during the construction phase, further contributing to the economic growth of the region and supporting the development of world-class sports facilities.

The improvements planned for Chandler highlight Queensland’s dedication to providing top-tier sports facilities and infrastructure for both elite athletes and the local community. The enhancements at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre and the new indoor sports hall will cater to a wide range of sporting activities, from swimming competitions to indoor sports events. By investing in these upgrades, Queensland is positioning itself as a leading destination for sports enthusiasts and fostering a culture of health, fitness, and athletic excellence. With the preparations well underway, Chandler is poised to become a prominent multi-sports hub that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
