The Biden administration is under pressure to sanction Samidoun: Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network due to its links to Iran and U.S.-designated terrorist group Hamas. The organization has been outlawed in Germany and classified as a terrorist entity by Israel. Samidoun has chapters in the U.S., Iran, and several European countries, spreading anti-Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda. Germany’s ban on Samidoun was linked to its support for terrorism and spreading hate. The U.S. State Department, while aware of these bans, cannot comment on potential terrorist designations due to First Amendment constraints.

Experts have noted Samidoun’s connections to terrorist organizations Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), meeting criteria for a terrorist ban. Samidoun’s role in supporting Hamas during pro-Palestinian campus protests raised concerns. International coordinator Charlotte Kates glorified Hamas’ violence at an event in Canada, leading to her arrest. Germany also banned an NGO supporting Hamas and Samidoun, aiming to combat antisemitism and terrorism. However, limited actions against these organizations have left room for anti-Jewish activities to persist.

The number of Hamas operatives in Germany has been rising, despite previous sanctions on the organization. Lax enforcement and support for NGOs raising funds for Samidoun have allowed these groups to flourish. Professor Michael Wolffsohn attributes the issue to the structural problems within the German state, exacerbated by former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s migration policies. The rise of Islamic antisemitism and the failure to address all forms of extremism have created challenges for Jewish communities in Germany.

The future for Jews in Germany looks uncertain as incidents of Jew-hatred continue to rise, exacerbated by protests against Israel. The influx of migrants from Islamic countries, where antisemitism is prevalent, poses a threat to Jewish life. Concerns have been raised about the increasing hostility towards Jews in the country. Addressing these challenges will require a comprehensive approach involving state governments, municipalities, police, and judicial authorities. The need to combat extremism and protect the Jewish community is paramount in order to ensure a safe environment for all residents in Germany.
