The Harlem School of the Arts recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with a “Bridgerton” themed party that epitomized luxury and sophistication. The school has a rich history of nurturing the creativity and talents of young people ages 2 to 18, offering programs in dance, theater, music, media, and design. It is HSA’s mission to provide access to the arts for all children, having inspired more than 60,000 students over the years. Notable alumni like rock ‘n’ roll icon Lenny Kravitz credit the school for setting them on the path to success.
The anniversary gala raised over $2.5 million to benefit the school, with about 75% of students receiving tuition assistance. The event featured students performing, painting, dancing, and acting in full costume with British accents, creating an immersive and unforgettable experience. The black-tie affair was held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in midtown Manhattan and honored HSA founder Dorothy Maynor, alongside distinguished individuals like author Nicole Avant and civil rights activist Jennifer Jones Austin.
The event also paid tribute to prominent figures like ABC News’ Deborah Roberts, the NBC “Today” show’s Al Roker and his son, and the Herb Alpert Foundation. After the formal program, an after-party was hosted by Black Thought of The Roots, with Questlove as the DJ, providing a modern soundtrack for guests to dance the night away. The celebration captured the essence of the “Bridgerton” era, with attendees dressed in period costumes and high-fashion attire reminiscent of a Regency-era Met Gala.
