Ukrainian soldiers from the 92nd Assault Brigade experienced disruptions in their crucial Starlink satellite internet service just before Russian troops pushed across the northern border. The service, operated by SpaceX, is used for communication, intelligence gathering, and drone attacks. The Russian military deployed stronger electronic weapons and sophisticated tools to degrade Starlink service as they advanced near Kharkiv. This poses a significant threat to Ukraine, which has relied on frontline connectivity and technology to outmaneuver the Russian military in the past but is now on the defensive.

Starlink beams internet connections down from satellites and distributes them through terminal dishes on the ground. While the service had previously withstood interference on the battlefield, recent Russian attacks have caused disruptions. Ukraine’s digital minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, noted that the Russian attacks on Starlink appeared to use new and advanced technology. Russia has developed capabilities to counter the service and has put Starlink on a list of targets. This puts Ukraine’s army at a further disadvantage, especially during critical battlefield moments.

The loss of Starlink connectivity during the Russian offensive hindered Ukrainian soldiers, who were forced to resort to sending slow text messages to communicate. Drone pilots like Ajax and Kartel faced challenges during the first armored attacks by the Russians, as the slow connection made it difficult to coordinate their responses. The disruptions forced the soldiers to use less efficient methods of communication, slowing down their decision-making processes at critical moments in the conflict.

Experts like Kari A. Bingen warn that high-power radio frequencies and precision jammers can be used to disrupt satellite communications. Russian forces have targeted Starlink by interfering with the signals between the satellites and the ground terminals. Ukrainian forces have attempted to shield Starlink from attacks by using various techniques such as placing terminals in holes or covering them with metal mesh. However, the effectiveness of these methods is not guaranteed against sophisticated Russian electronic warfare systems.

Ukraine’s dependence on Starlink, controlled by Elon Musk, has raised concerns among experts who warn against relying on a single company for such a vital resource. While the Ukrainian government is testing new systems and exploring alternatives, there are few options that offer comprehensive and reliable service like Starlink. On some occasions, Ukrainian officials have directly appealed to Musk for access to Starlink during military operations, but his responses have been unpredictable. The U.S. government has assisted in negotiations at times, particularly in providing Starlink terminals to Ukraine.

As Ukraine continues to navigate disruptions in its Starlink service, it faces the challenge of maintaining connectivity and communication on the battlefield. The ongoing conflicts with Russia highlight the importance of reliable and secure communication networks for military operations. With both sides employing advanced electronic warfare tactics, the conflict underscores the need for Ukraine to develop alternative systems for maintaining connectivity and information sharing in the face of technological disruptions.
