Mohamed is concerned that these higher costs may become the new norm, as airlines have no reason to reduce prices. However, WestJet has announced plans to update basic fare options that could lower costs for passengers who do not require carry-on baggage.
In response to the rising costs of air travel, WestJet is calling on the federal government to review its fee structure and implement measures to help reduce costs for travellers. Alberta’s Transportation Minister, Devin Dreeshen, is also looking into ways to make air travel more affordable across the province, particularly in regional areas such as Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Grande Prairie. The province is conducting feasibility studies at 10 municipal airports to improve flight options for Albertans, with the goal of encouraging more domestic air travel within the province.
To help mitigate the impact of inflated ticket prices, Mohamed advises travellers to explore options for lowering travel costs, such as utilizing points and selecting package deals whenever possible. By taking advantage of these strategies, passengers may be able to offset some of the increased expenses associated with booking flights. Mohamed’s recommendation comes as a response to the current challenges faced by Albertans in securing affordable air travel options, as prices continue to rise significantly.
