This fall, changes are coming to the Supplemental Security Income program that could result in more money for SSI beneficiaries. The Social Security Administration announced a final rule on May 9 that will expand the public definition of a public assistance household, leading to updates in the SSI program. These changes will allow more people to qualify for benefits, increase payment amounts for some SSI recipients, and reduce reporting burdens for individuals living in public assistance homes. The goal is to simplify policies and remove barriers to accessing SSI for low-income families.

The extent to which SSI payments will increase depends on individual circumstances. The new rule assumes that recipients living in a public assistance household do not receive money from other household members, which was previously counted as income. This change will potentially result in higher monthly SSI payments for some individuals. While it is uncertain how much payments will go up, the rule will take effect in the fall, and details will be provided by the Social Security Administration at that time.

Under the final rule, the definition of a public assistance household will be expanded to include households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Not all household members will be required to receive benefits to qualify, unlike the previous requirement. With this change, SSI beneficiaries living in households where only some members receive assistance will benefit. Additionally, the rule will no longer include food in In-Kind Support and Maintenance calculations, and SSI rental subsidy policies will be expanded nationwide.

The SSI changes are set to take effect on September 30, 2024. This could result in payment increases starting in October, but specific details are still pending. Eligibility for SSI benefits includes being at least 65 years old, visually impaired or disabled, having limited income and resources, being a US citizen or national, and residing in one of the designated areas. Certain students temporarily residing abroad may also qualify. It is essential to understand the requirements and potential changes to SSI to ensure full access to benefits and increased financial support.
