Sandra Dolores Yawn, also known as Captain Sandy, has faced many challenges in her life, including struggles with alcoholism and legal issues during her teenage years. After seeking help through Alcoholics Anonymous, she pursued a career in the yachting industry and became a successful yacht captain. Despite her past hardships, she found success as a star on the Bravo reality TV show “Below Deck Mediterranean.”
In 2018, Leah Rae Shafer, a former gospel singer turned entrepreneur, reached out to Captain Sandy on Facebook to offer her blessings and congratulations on the success of the TV show. The two women quickly formed a connection, and their relationship blossomed into a romantic one. Despite initial hesitation on Ms. Shafer’s part about entering into a same-sex relationship, the couple found love and support in each other.
Their relationship faced challenges, including a public outing that led to the end of Ms. Shafer’s gospel singing career and backlash from her community. However, the couple found solace in their love for each other and the support of their family, ultimately leading to their engagement in Greece in 2023 and their wedding aboard a superyacht in Fort Lauderdale in May 2024.
The wedding ceremony, officiated by Nadine Rajabi, was a beautiful and emotional affair, with the two brides exchanging heartfelt vows and celebrating their love with family and friends. After the ceremony, the couple embarked on a five-day honeymoon to Little Palm Island, with Captain Sandy at the helm of the yacht.
Looking ahead, the couple plans to move to Ponte Vedra, Florida, to be closer to family and for Ms. Shafer to open a new skin care studio. Captain Sandy continues her work on “Below Deck Mediterranean,” with the ninth season set to premiere in June. Despite the challenges they have faced, including personal and professional hardships, the couple remains committed to each other and their future together.
