The collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which has trapped a ship in a shipping channel used to access the Port of Baltimore, had a portion of the bridge destroyed in a controlled demolition on Monday. The controlled demolition aimed to break the span laying on top of the ship into smaller pieces while the crew of 21 people remained sheltered in a designated area inside the ship. Despite the demolition, a part of the structure fell into the channel, with a video of the event showing that a portion of the span remained on top of the ship.

Officials are working to permanently reopen the channel late this month, following the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26. The collapse resulted in the deaths of six construction workers who were working on the bridge when a cargo ship struck a support beam. The body of the final victim of the collapse was identified recently. Around 15,000 workers’ jobs and 500 local businesses were impacted by the bridge collapse. The crew of the ship, called the Dali, have been onboard since the accident and have been cooperating with investigators from the FBI and National Transportation Safety Board. Most of the crew members are from India.

The controlled demolition on Monday aimed to alleviate the situation and remove the portions of the collapsed bridge that were obstructing the ship from moving freely in the channel. However, the aftermath of the demolition still left a part of the span on top of the ship, potentially complicating efforts to free the vessel. The crew onboard the ship remained safe during the demolition process, with no reported injuries. Efforts to permanently reopen the channel are still ongoing, with officials hoping to achieve this goal by the end of the month.

The tragedy of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse has had a significant impact on the local community in Baltimore, with thousands of workers and businesses affected by the closure of the bridge and the disruption to transportation and commerce. The recovery and cleanup efforts have been extensive, with a focus on removing the wreckage and allowing the affected areas to return to normalcy. As investigations continue into the cause of the collapse, the crew of the trapped ship remains onboard, cooperating with authorities to determine the best course of action for freeing the vessel and reopening the shipping channel.

Despite the challenges and setbacks faced during the cleanup and recovery efforts following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, progress is being made towards reopening the shipping channel and restoring normalcy to the affected areas. The controlled demolition of a portion of the collapsed bridge on Monday was a significant step towards freeing the ship trapped in the channel, although further work may be required to completely remove the obstruction. As the investigation into the cause of the collapse continues, the community remains hopeful for a swift resolution to the situation and a return to regular operations at the Port of Baltimore.
