Samsung has recently rolled out the One UI 6.1 update to older Galaxy phone users in Korea, and now the company is extending the update to users in the U.S. The update includes a range of Galaxy AI features such as Circle to Search, Chat Assist, Interpreter, Live Translate, and more. These features were previously exclusive to the S24 series but are now available for phones up to three years old.

In the U.S., Samsung is rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to the Galaxy S22 series, Flip 4, Fold 4, and Tab S8 devices. Users are being notified via email about the features they can expect to see with this update. However, older devices like the Galaxy S21 series, Flip 3, and Fold 3 will only receive two Galaxy AI features – Circle to Search and Chat Assist. This may indicate that these older devices could be the last to receive Galaxy AI updates due to performance reasons.

Samsung has mentioned that the Galaxy AI features included in the update will be free until the end of 2025. This could potentially mean that Samsung might start charging for these tools in the future, though Google-powered AI skills like Circle to Search are likely to remain free as they are Google’s technology. Given Google’s track record of updating older Pixel phones with new AI features for free, it is unlikely that they would suddenly start charging a subscription for these features.

The fact that Samsung is leaving the door open to charging for AI features raises questions about Android updates on older phones. Will users be able to pay for AI features even after their phones are outside of the update window? It remains to be seen what Samsung’s plans are once the free Galaxy AI deadline expires, but for now, the update has increased the value of older handsets and given Galaxy buyers a reason to consider upgrading to the S22 or S23.

As users in the U.S. receive the One UI 6.1 update with Galaxy AI features, Samsung is positioning itself as a leader in providing AI capabilities across its range of devices. The update not only enhances the user experience for older Galaxy phone users but also incentivizes potential buyers to invest in the latest Samsung devices to access these advanced AI tools. With the potential for a subscription model for AI features in the future, Samsung is paving the way for innovative ways to monetize its products and services while ensuring users have access to cutting-edge technology.
