The Harvard Business Review and other notable thought leaders are adamant that AI will not replace managers and that humans will always have a unique advantage over machines when it comes to problem-solving and decision-making. They argue that AI will serve as an assistant rather than a partner or boss in the workplace. However, history has shown that thought leaders can often get it wrong, as demonstrated by past predictions such as the internet’s collapse or the failure of television and video games to make a lasting impact. Therefore, it’s important to consider the possibility that the assurances of the AI-will-not-take-your-job crowd may be incorrect.

While the reassurances from thought leaders that AI will not replace managers may be comforting, there is a need to acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding the future impact of AI. The power and capabilities of AI are still in their early stages, and it’s impossible to predict how AI will evolve and affect different professions in the long term. Short-term predictions may be based on current processes and AI capabilities, but extrapolating these findings to make sweeping statements about the future risks oversimplifying a complex issue.

Segmentation of domains and timelines is crucial when discussing the role that AI will play in different industries. Some domains, such as medical imaging, may adapt to AI more quickly due to the nature of the problems and tasks involved. Generative AI, in particular, shines in creative tasks like image and video generation, content creation, and drug discovery. It’s essential to identify domains with well-bounded processes that are susceptible to AI replacement, such as higher education and other professions.

Rather than focusing on what AI will not replace, it’s time to acknowledge the potential impact that AI may have on knowledge workers in the future. Machine learning and generative AI have the potential to replace a significant number of knowledge workers in the next three to five years, much more than many may anticipate. While the extent of AI’s influence in the long term remains uncertain, it’s clear that AI will continue to reshape the workplace and the roles of human workers in the years to come. It’s crucial to move beyond reassurances and prepare for the transformative impact that AI may have on various industries in the future.
