New York’s Division of Food Safety and Inspection is investigating a case in which a Long Island bakery, The Savory Fig, is accused of reselling doughnuts from Dunkin’ under the guise that they were vegan and gluten-free treats made by the owner, Michelle Siriani. The accusation was posted on Instagram by Cindysnacks, a vegan market in Long Island, after noticing that the doughnuts from The Savory Fig bore an uncanny resemblance to Dunkin’s sprinkles and tested positive for gluten. The Stengells, owners of Cindysnacks, have since cut ties with Siriani and apologized for unknowingly providing her products to their customers and family.

Dunkin’ did not immediately respond to the accusations, but their allergen and ingredient guide on their website indicates that all their doughnuts contain eggs, milk, and wheat, making them unsuitable for those following a vegan or gluten-free diet. The Stengells have reached out to the New York Division of Food Safety and Inspection, as well as the Suffolk County Department of Health, to ensure proper oversight of home processors like The Savory Fig. The Stengells have stated that they will not provide any further interviews or statements regarding the matter.

Following the allegations, The Savory Fig deactivated its Instagram page and received numerous negative comments and ratings on its Facebook page. People online have been sharing their experiences living with celiac disease and food allergies, highlighting the importance of accurate food labeling and transparency in ingredients. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes damage to the intestines when gluten is ingested, while gluten intolerance may result in symptoms like bloating, nausea, or joint pain. Wheat allergies can lead to severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, similar to a peanut allergy.

Companies and restaurants have begun offering gluten-free options, but it can still be challenging for individuals with gluten sensitivities to know what contains trace amounts or large quantities of gluten unless they prepare the food themselves. Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist and immunologist, advises individuals to be well-versed in reading labels and ingredients to ensure their safety. The case involving The Savory Fig serves as a reminder of the importance of proper food labeling and transparency in the food industry to protect individuals with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and food allergies.
