As the 2024 Republican National Convention approaches, a number of potential running mates are vying for the opportunity to stand alongside former President Donald Trump on the stage. Among those considered to be on Trump’s shortlist is South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. Noem has been a frontrunner for the role but recent negative headlines surrounding controversies in her new book could complicate her chances. Noem has been defending herself vigorously against criticism, particularly regarding her admission to shooting her dog for attacking a neighbor’s chickens, which has raised concerns about her viability as a VP pick.

Some political analysts believe that Noem’s handling of the book controversy has been damaging to her chances of being selected as Trump’s running mate. Her seeming false claim about meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has also raised doubts about her credibility. While Noem brings strengths to the table, including her executive and legislative experience as a two-term governor and previous service in Congress, her recent controversies may overshadow her candidacy and make her a contentious choice for the VP slot.

Despite her recent missteps, some experts point to Noem’s qualifications and background as potential strengths that could benefit Trump’s White House chances. Noem’s gender and generational balance, as well as her conservative stance on issues like abortion, could appeal to the Republican base. Additionally, her diverse background as a business owner, farmer, rancher, and former congressional intern adds depth to her candidacy and could deflect Democratic attacks on the GOP’s stance on women’s issues. However, some analysts believe that Noem’s chances of being selected as Trump’s running mate have diminished after her recent controversies.

While Noem continues to face criticism and scrutiny, other potential candidates have been floated to join Trump on the Republican ticket. Names such as South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, House GOP Conference Chair Eliste Stefanik, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio have been mentioned as possible contenders. It remains unclear when Trump will announce his vice presidential pick, but speculation suggests it could be shortly before the July RNC convention. Noem is expected to attend another fundraiser alongside Trump in New York City, indicating that she is still actively campaigning for the role.
