As someone who has struggled with mild depression and anxiety for many years, travel has been both a source of joy and a challenge. From homesickness in Sarajevo to anxiety in Azerbaijan, the risks and hurdles of traveling can be especially triggering for those who are less resilient. However, spanning over 55 countries, my trips have enriched my life, providing moments of refreshment and wonder. In light of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, I have discovered some tips on managing mental health while traveling.

In one instance, I made the mistake of coming off antidepressants just before a trip to New Zealand, leading to panic attacks and mood swings while abroad. This experience taught me the importance of avoiding major medication changes before traveling, as well as checking how to access medical facilities in my destination and being aware of relevant rules regarding prescription drugs. It is also crucial to disclose any health conditions on travel insurance and have contingency plans in place to lessen the risk of stressful situations.

To lessen anxiety while traveling, I have developed contingency plans such as never booking an airport connection of less than 90 minutes and downloading escapist entertainment for waits. Group tours can also be beneficial for solo travelers, offering a mix of cultural inclusions and downtime. Planning a treat for after returning from a trip and taking a day or two off work to ease back into daily life can help alleviate post-trip blues. It is essential to pay attention to one’s mental health before, during, and after a trip.

Travel can be both enriching and draining, leading to a sense of disappointment and purposelessness. To make travel more meaningful, have a goal for your trip and consider engaging with locals and stepping outside your comfort zone. Practices such as talking to a friend, journaling, meditation, or a digital detox can help you find greater meaning in your experiences. Managing expectations when traveling is crucial, as it is essential to recognize that life’s challenges will still be present even while on a trip.

Author Alain de Botton’s observation that when we travel, we bring ourselves along emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and managing expectations. Remembering to look after physical health while traveling is also crucial. From staying hydrated to getting adequate rest and exercise, taking care of physical health can help maintain mental well-being. Whether adjusting to different climates, cuisines, or time zones, prioritizing physical health can contribute to a more enjoyable and mentally healthy travel experience. Travel can be transformative, but it is essential to prioritize mental and physical well-being throughout the journey.
