Former President Donald Trump took a jab at New Jersey rock icon Bruce Springsteen during his massive Jersey Shore rally, claiming to have a bigger crowd than the legendary singer. Springsteen, a lifelong Democrat and Trump critic, has endorsed every Democratic presidential candidate since 2004 and has a podcast with former President Barack Obama. Trump’s remarks drew immediate reactions on social media, with many questioning his knowledge of Springsteen’s political beliefs.

Republican presidential candidate Trump arrived for his campaign rally in Wildwood Beach in New Jersey in front of an estimated crowd of between 80,000 and 100,000 people. The remarks about Springsteen were made as Trump declared his intention to win New Jersey, a traditionally Democratic stronghold that has not voted Republican in the last eight elections. However, President Joe Biden won the state over Trump by a significant margin of 57 percent to 41 percent in 2020.

The Hill/Emerson Poll released in April showed Biden leading Trump in New Jersey by a margin of 46 percent to 39 percent. In a hypothetical five-person race including independent and Green Party candidates, Biden’s lead over Trump shrank to 41 percent to 36 percent. Despite the Democratic dominance in the state, Trump made a bold claim that he would win New Jersey, making his rally in Wildwood Beach a significant political event in the state.

The former president’s rally was held 150 miles south of the Manhattan courthouse where he was facing a felony hush money trial. Trump is the first former president in U.S. history to stand trial in a criminal case, pleading not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. He has consistently maintained that the charges against him are politically motivated, and his rally in Wildwood Beach was seen as an attempt to energize his supporters and gain traction in New Jersey.

Despite Trump’s confident assertion that he would win New Jersey, the state has given no indication of shifting its Democratic support. President Biden’s victory over Trump by a wide margin in 2020 and the consistent Democratic history in the state suggest that Trump’s claim may be more of a political statement than a realistic expectation. The clash between Trump and Springsteen highlights the ongoing political divide in America, with celebrities using their platforms to endorse candidates and advocate for their political beliefs. The rally in Wildwood Beach marked an important moment in the political landscape of New Jersey, with Trump making a bold statement about his intentions in the traditionally Democratic state.
