Mayor Eric Adams, a Christian but not Catholic, met Pope Francis during a trip to Italy where he is working to understand global conflicts that impact New York City. The meeting came as Mayor Adams faces difficulties in New York, including low poll numbers and a federal investigation into his campaign fundraising activities. The two discussed conflicts in Haiti, Africa, and the Middle East, as well as the Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism. The meeting took place during the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, organized by the Fratelli Tutti Foundation to promote peace.

Pope Francis emphasized the importance of fraternity and common humanity in ensuring lasting peace during the conference. Mayor Adams described the meeting as a sacred moment and praised Pope Francis’s leadership on critical global issues such as the refugee crisis and climate change. Adams often discusses how his Christian faith guides his governing, advocating for a role for prayer in schools and questioning the separation of church and state. He is known as a “prayer warrior” who incorporates his beliefs into his leadership approach.

During his visit to Italy, Mayor Adams toured Rome and participated in community activities, like cleaning up the Piazza di San Cosimato with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. Both mayors highlighted the shared challenges faced by their cities, such as homelessness and supporting migrants seeking asylum. Adams expressed his desire to learn from Rome’s approaches to these issues and suggested that New York is the “Rome of America” due to its unique position in the country.

As part of his visit, Mayor Adams visited historic sites like the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums. He attended the closing ceremony of the World Meeting on Human Fraternity at St. Peter’s Basilica and is expected to tour a site providing services for migrants before returning to New York City. While Adams received praise for embracing Pope Francis’s antiwar message, he also faced criticism for not speaking out more on Palestinian suffering during conflicts involving Israel and Gaza.

Despite criticism, Adams defended his stance on global conflicts, emphasizing his commitment to protecting innocent lives regardless of nationality or religion. He maintained that he has taken a strong stance against violence worldwide and believes in consistent messaging on the importance of preserving life. The trip to Italy allowed Mayor Adams to engage with international leaders, gain insights on addressing urban challenges, and reflect on the role of faith in governance.
