The International Olympic Committee has announced the creation of a Refugee Olympic Team for the Paris 2024 Games, which will consist of thirty-six athletes from 11 different countries competing in 12 sports. The athletes were selected based on their sporting performance as well as their refugee status being verified by United Nations bodies. Several National Olympic Committees, such as Great Britain, France, and the USA, have provided training facilities for the athletes. Among the members of the team are boxer Cindy Ngamba from Cameroon, swimmer Alaa Maso from Syria, and Olympic champion sprint canoeist Fernando Jorge, who defected from Cuba after winning gold in Tokyo.
This will be the third time a Refugee Olympic Team has competed at the summer Games, with the team now having its own emblem featuring a way marker arrow with a heart at the center. IOC president Thomas Bach has welcomed the athletes, stating that they are an enrichment to the Olympic community and will demonstrate the human potential of resilience and excellence. He encouraged people around the world to cheer for the Refugee Olympic Team, as they compete not only for themselves but also to raise awareness about the refugee crisis and the challenges faced by displaced people worldwide. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi praised the team for showcasing the resilience, courage, and hopes of all those uprooted by war and persecution.
The team’s chef de mission, Masomah Ali Zada, urged the athletes to enjoy the experience and take pride in the opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games.
