A 38-year-old man was arrested in Kelantan, Malaysia after opening fire on his wife at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The incident occurred at the entrance of the arrival hall in Terminal 1, where the suspect fired two shots at his wife but missed. One of the shots hit one of the woman’s bodyguards, critically injuring him. The suspect was apprehended the following day, sparking a nationwide manhunt and increased security measures.
Police refrained from engaging the suspect at KLIA to avoid jeopardising public safety as the area was crowded. Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan stated that it was better to let the suspect leave the area to keep members of the public safe. The suspect had a personal vendetta against his wife, and they were in the process of getting a divorce. The police had recorded statements from 11 witnesses, including the suspect’s wife, policemen, and airport security personnel.
Security at KLIA will be tightened and police efficiency will be raised with the use of electric scooters. The installation of scanners to tighten control and improve early detection, especially for individuals carrying prohibited items, is also a proposed measure. People can currently enter the airport area without strict controls, so stricter regulations are recommended to prevent individuals from endangering civilians at the airport. Additionally, the closure of corridors near the gates of arrival and departure halls and the parking lane near these gates are among the proposed security enhancements.
The improvements in security measures at KLIA are focused on preventing similar incidents in the future and ensuring the safety of all individuals at the airport. Selangor police will soon receive electric scooters to allow for faster police response and wider patrolling coverage. The use of scanners will help in detecting individuals carrying prohibited items, such as firearms and firecrackers, and reducing the risk of potential threats. Closing corridors near gates and regulating access to the parking lane near arrival and departure halls are also steps aimed at enhancing security at the airport.
Overall, the incident at KLIA has prompted increased vigilance and tightened security measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The suspect’s arrest has brought closure to the case and provided assurance to the public regarding safety at the airport. The police continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting and work to ensure the safety and security of all individuals at KLIA.
