President Joe Biden stated that the United States had assisted Israel in taking down “nearly all” of the drones and missiles launched by Iran during an attack on Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces reported that Iran fired over 200 drones and missiles, the majority of which were intercepted. The attack followed the destruction of Iran’s consulate in Syria, leading to threats of retaliation against Israel. Biden met with his national security team to monitor the situation and expressed support for Israel in defending against the aerial threats from Iran. He also affirmed the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s security in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In response to Iran’s attack on Israel, Biden vowed to coordinate a united diplomatic response with other G7 leaders and emphasized the need to remain vigilant against threats. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei pledged to punish Israel for the airstrike that targeted Iran’s embassy in Syria. An official letter from the Iranian Ambassador to the U.N. notified U.N. leadership of the military strikes conducted by Iran as a response to the killing of Iranian military personnel in Damascus, citing the country’s right to self-defense under the U.N. Charter. Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war, with both countries accusing Iran of backing various militant groups across the Middle East.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas started with a surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group, resulting in a high death toll in Israel. In response, Israel launched an operation targeting Hamas in Gaza, leading to a significant number of Palestinian casualties. U.S. and Israeli officials have alleged that Iran provides political and material support to Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other militias in the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and forces in Iraq and Syria. The ongoing support from Iran has fueled tensions in the region and contributed to the escalation of violence between different factions.

Biden’s efforts to support Israel in defending against Iran’s aerial threats reflect the longstanding alliance between the U.S. and Israel. The deployment of U.S. military assets to the region and coordination with other G7 leaders demonstrate a commitment to addressing security challenges in the Middle East. The exchange of diplomatic messages between Iran and the U.N. highlights the complex political dynamics at play, with each side invoking international law and invoking the right to self-defense. The ongoing conflict underscores the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation and mitigate the impact of geopolitical rivalries on regional stability. As the situation evolves, continued engagement and cooperation among key players will be essential to navigate the complexities of conflict resolution in the Middle East.
