A recent poll conducted by Greenberg Research for Democracy Corps shows that U.S. President Joe Biden is gaining ground on Donald Trump in key swing states. The polling, which surveyed 2,500 registered voters in the U.S. between March 28 and April 2, 2024, focused on nine battleground states including Arizona, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Battleground states are where the vote margin is typically narrow, making them crucial to election outcomes. The survey revealed that Biden has closed the gap with Trump, moving from a six-point deficit in November 2023 to a three-point difference, with 41 percent of likely voters supporting Biden and 44 percent backing Trump.

Democracy Corps, an independent, non-profit organization founded by Stan Greenberg, who previously served as a polling adviser to President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore, conducted the polling. The research also showed that Biden is making gains with swing voters, including independents, double haters, and moderates. Double haters are individuals who dislike both political candidates or parties. Biden increased his support among swing voters from 37 percent in November 2023 to 40 percent in April 2024, while Trump also saw a slight increase from 43 percent to 44 percent. The poll also indicated that Biden has gained support among Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters in the battleground states, with Black voters showing the most significant increase in support for Biden.

In terms of demographic support, the poll revealed that Biden’s popularity among Black and Hispanic voters has increased, while his support among Asian voters has decreased slightly. Among Black voters surveyed, 68 percent indicated they would vote for Biden, up by eight points from November 2023. Hispanic support for Biden also grew by eight points, while Asian support decreased by four points. Trump made gains among Asian voters, garnering 34 percent support compared to Biden’s 47 percent. The findings suggest that Biden’s campaign is making inroads within key demographics, positioning him favorably against Trump in the upcoming election.

Battleground states play a crucial role in determining election outcomes, with states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin shifting from one party to another in the 2020 election. These states are often won by narrow margins, highlighting their significance in determining the overall winner. For example, Biden narrowly defeated Trump in states like Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania by margins of less than 2 percent. In contrast, traditionally blue or red states such as California and Tennessee saw more significant margins of victory for Biden and Trump, respectively. The focus on battleground states underscores the importance of targeting key demographics and regions to secure electoral success in a competitive political landscape.

The recent polling data indicates that Biden’s campaign is gaining momentum in key battleground states, with improvements in voter support, particularly among swing voters and diverse demographic groups. Biden’s strides in narrowing the gap with Trump in crucial swing states suggest a competitive electoral landscape leading up to the election. By focusing on appealing to swing voters and key demographic groups, Biden’s campaign is positioning itself to gain a strategic advantage in a highly contested election. The dynamics of battleground states and the shift in voter sentiment underscore the importance of understanding and addressing the concerns and priorities of diverse voter groups to secure electoral success.
