In the new adaptation of the popular video game series Fallout, stars Walton Goggins and Ella Purnell discuss the intense first meeting between their characters, The Ghoul and Lucy MacLean. Lucy is a part of an underground society living in fallout shelters after a nuclear disaster struck the U.S. two centuries ago. The latest in a line of vault dwellers, Lucy must leave her safe confines to embark on a dangerous mission in the wasteland above.

One of the individuals Lucy encounters in the wasteland is The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, a gunslinger who has been wandering the wasteland for over 200 years after being turned into a rotting half-corpse by nuclear radiation. The Ghoul was formerly known as Cooper Howard, a 1950s movie star famous for his roles as a cowboy in Western films. Their first meeting in Episode 3 of Fallout is harsh, with The Ghoul’s treatment of Lucy becoming even more brutal in Episode 4.

According to Goggins, The Ghoul’s lack of emotion stems from his two centuries of survival in the harsh wasteland, causing him to see Lucy as something other than human. The character’s perception changes when he realizes he needs her to stay alive, which forces him to recognize her humanity. Purnell commented that Lucy’s encounter with The Ghoul is a necessary aspect of the storyline, serving as a springboard for the characters to influence each other and adapt to survive as the season progresses.

Purnell revealed that filming her physically demanding scenes with Goggins was challenging but comforting, knowing that he was not actually his character and meant her no harm. The actress highlighted the stark differences between Lucy and The Ghoul, making their interactions all the more intriguing. As the season unfolds, viewers can expect to see how the characters’ initial meeting impacts their development and the ways in which they influence each other as they navigate the harsh post-apocalyptic world.

All eight episodes of Fallout are available for streaming on Prime Video, offering fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the captivating and intense world of the video game series brought to life on screen. With a focus on the complex relationship between Lucy and The Ghoul, the series explores themes of survival, humanity, and transformation in a post-apocalyptic setting, making for a compelling and engaging viewing experience for audiences.
