As businesses increasingly rely on technology to streamline processes, save costs, and enhance customer and employee experiences, they must also consider the environmental impact of their digital solutions. Implementing technology can result in a significant increase in carbon footprint, but there are strategies that organizations can adopt to minimize their energy consumption and overall environmental impact. Forbes Technology Council members shared 20 practical and impactful steps that businesses can take to reduce their carbon footprint.

The first step suggested is to establish a baseline for energy consumption. By using modern data center infrastructure management software, organizations can track and measure how much energy their IT infrastructure is consuming. Without this baseline, it is challenging to improve energy efficiency in the IT environment. Another key suggestion is to share and review sustainability data, which helps in making informed decisions about products and services based on their environmental impact and true economic cost.

Exploring sustainable connectivity solutions, increasing operational efficiency, and gaining insights from Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) are other strategies recommended by the Council members. Sustainable connectivity solutions, such as green fiber, can reduce the environmental footprint of large networks. Optimizing processes with artificial intelligence, streamlining data strategies, and building on existing infrastructure are ways to increase operational efficiency and minimize carbon footprints. LCAs provide insights for companies to comply with regulations and reduce environmental impact across a product’s entire life cycle.

Another suggestion is to leverage the power of quantum computing to save energy and perform computations faster. Shifting to cloud computing, partnering with vendors that share sustainability values, and adopting remote work policies are additional strategies for minimizing carbon footprints. Supporting employees in adopting greener habits, managing notifications, and incorporating sustainability awareness training are highlighted as important steps for enhancing environmental responsibility within an organization.

Practical tips such as minimizing email attachment sizes, checking providers’ net-zero commitments, and putting energy consumption at the forefront of IT investment decisions are recommended by Council members. Virtualization, care in managing AI initiatives, and adopting energy-efficient hardware and software are also important strategies for reducing environmental impact. Finally, extending the lifespan of existing hardware, repurposing equipment, and investing in digital workplace solutions are ways to minimize the environmental impact of technology usage within organizations. By implementing these strategies, businesses can work towards reducing their carbon footprint and promoting sustainability in their operations.
