Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s agenda for 2024 focuses on improving access to child care and children’s health care. During his State of the State address, DeWine outlined various policies aimed at enhancing health care, student learning, and the state’s economy. The voucher program would benefit families earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level, potentially assisting 8,000 children. Additionally, DeWine aims to retain more college graduates in the state by tracking their job placement within six months of graduation, providing accountability and aiding students in selecting educational institutions.
In an effort to support children’s learning, DeWine plans to ensure that every child who fails a vision screening in school receives a follow-up eye exam and eyeglasses if necessary. He also announced the establishment of a “Children’s Vision Strike Force” to address vision care needs. DeWine pledged to enhance health care services for infants and schoolchildren, proposing the introduction of school-based health clinics and an initiative offering new mothers nurse visits three weeks post-delivery. Such programs have proven effective in reducing infant mortality rates and improving overall health outcomes.
DeWine advocated for the expansion of a quick-response service for children facing mental health crises, aiming to provide this support in all 88 Ohio counties. In terms of public health and safety, he urged lawmakers to forbid public marijuana use following the legalization of recreational marijuana by voters. DeWine also called for stricter seat-belt laws, reduced cellphone usage in classrooms, and new legislation mandating parental consent for children under 16 using social media apps. He criticized social media companies for targeting and addicting children for profit, labeling their actions as shameful.
Additionally, the governor proposed banning flavored vaping and cigarettes, as well as restricting the sale of delta-8 THC to children. DeWine emphasized the importance of protecting children from potentially harmful substances and ensuring their overall well-being. His policy priorities underscore a commitment to enhancing access to child care, improving health care services, and promoting educational opportunities for Ohio’s youth.
