The hybrid system in the 4Runner combines a 48 horsepower electric motor with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, resulting in a total output of up to 326 horsepower. This makes it the most powerful 4Runner model yet, although gas-only versions will also be available at a lower price point. The surge in popularity of hybrids among consumers, as well as the benefits they offer in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, has contributed to Toyota’s decision to expand their hybrid line-up.
Critics have raised concerns about Toyota’s focus on hybrids instead of fully electric vehicles, accusing the automaker of hindering the industry’s transition to EVs. However, Toyota’s hybrids continue to be popular among consumers, and the addition of a hybrid option to the 4Runner aligns with the off-road focus of the vehicle. The new 4Runner will join the Tacoma and a retro-styled Land Cruiser as part of Toyota’s line-up of off-road-focused 4-cylinder hybrid models.
