Google has announced the launch of its own version of Apple’s Find My feature, called Find My Device. This service works by leveraging the large number of Android devices to help users locate lost phones, tablets, and other items. Once a device is marked as lost, it sends out a signal via Bluetooth to nearby Android devices, which then relay the location back to the owner. This new feature is being rolled out to Android devices worldwide, with a focus on the U.S. and Canada initially.

It is believed that Google has been preparing for the launch of Find My Device for some time, waiting for certain changes to come to Apple’s AirTags with the upcoming iOS 17.5 update. The service will initially be compatible with Android devices running Android 9 or later, which includes over 1 billion devices since the operating software was first introduced in 2018. Additionally, Pixel 8 and 8 Pro owners will have the ability to locate their devices even if they are turned off or have a dead battery, thanks to specialized hardware.

In May, Bluetooth trackers will be compatible with Find My Device, with some products offering two versions to support the feature. Other brands such as Chipolo and Pebblebee will also be supported. The app will allow users to find items nearby with onscreen guidance and will offer features that go beyond what Apple’s Find My feature provides. For example, Nest devices in the home can help locate items, and users can share items with friends and family to assist in the search for lost items.

The Find My Device app will be available for download in the Google Play Store, providing users with a centralized hub for locating their Android devices and other items. With the introduction of this new service, Google aims to offer a seamless and secure solution for finding misplaced items using a network of Android devices. Users can expect features such as crowdsourced location data from other Android devices, specialized hardware support for Pixel devices, and integration with third-party Bluetooth trackers.

Overall, the introduction of Find My Device by Google marks a significant step forward in the world of device tracking and location services. By leveraging the vast network of Android devices worldwide, Google is aiming to provide a robust and reliable solution for users to locate their lost items quickly and securely. With features such as support for Bluetooth trackers, specialized hardware for Pixel devices, and collaboration with other brands, Find My Device offers a comprehensive solution for users looking to track and locate their Android devices and other belongings.
