The Israel-Hamas war, which has been ongoing for half a year, has become one of the most destructive and deadly conflicts of the 21st century. Since Hamas’ October 7 cross-border attack, Israel has been relentlessly bombing the Gaza Strip, leading to the displacement of the majority of the population and causing many to seek refuge in Rafah. The situation in Gaza has deteriorated to the point where food is scarce, famine is approaching, and the UN has warned of a looming humanitarian crisis. Cease-fire talks have been ongoing with no end in sight, and both sides continue to engage in tit-for-tat fighting, displacing thousands of civilians.

By the numbers, the conflict has resulted in a devastating loss of life. Over 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, including more than 13,000 children. In Israel, approximately 1,200 people have lost their lives, with additional casualties in the West Bank and Lebanon. Civilians have borne the brunt of the violence, with women and children making up a significant portion of those killed in Gaza. Additionally, aid workers, health workers, journalists, and first responders have also tragically lost their lives in the conflict.

The destruction and humanitarian crisis in Gaza are staggering. More than half of the buildings in the region have been damaged or destroyed, and over 60% of homes have been affected. The majority of school buildings have suffered damage, and only a fraction of hospitals are still functioning. The UN has warned of “catastrophic” food insecurity for over a million Palestinian civilians in Gaza, with a high percentage of children facing acute malnutrition. Additionally, all students in northern Gaza are currently out of school.

The number of injuries resulting from the conflict is also significant, with tens of thousands of Palestinians and Israelis sustaining injuries since the start of the violence. In Gaza alone, over 75,000 Palestinians have been injured, along with thousands more in the West Bank and Israel. The toll on Israeli soldiers and civilians is also notable, with many casualties reported on both sides.

The displacement of populations is widespread, with 1.7 million Palestinians currently displaced in Gaza, accounting for 70% of the region’s population. In Israel, 90,000 people from border communities have been forced to flee their homes, representing less than 1% of the population. Hostages taken by Hamas during the conflict add another layer of complexity to the situation, with hundreds of individuals held captive and many confirmed dead. A temporary pause in fighting resulted in the release of some Palestinian prisoners, but the overall situation remains dire.

As the conflict continues to rage on, the toll on both Palestinian and Israeli civilians continues to grow. The devastation in Gaza is particularly severe, with widespread destruction, food insecurity, and displacement affecting the population. The loss of life, injuries, and trauma experienced by individuals on both sides of the conflict highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing violence and a lasting peace in the region.
