A Haitian migrant, Kenol Baptiste, allegedly murdered his two roommates in an apartment complex in Middletown, NY while he was awaiting a federal deportation hearing. Police responded to a call about a stabbing at the Ruth Court apartments and discovered one man dead inside the unit, while a second man was found outside with serious injuries. The second victim later died at the Garnet Health Medical Center during surgery. Baptiste was captured by a police K-9 team in a wooded area near the apartment shortly after the stabbings and has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
The victims, as well as Baptiste, were all Haitian and spoke Creole. They had been living together in the apartment complex for less than a year and were reportedly acquaintances. The motive behind the killings has not been released, and the victims’ names have not been made public pending family notification. Middletown Police Chief John Ewanciw stated that the group of individuals had moved into the apartment about a year ago and that they were still trying to determine how Baptiste entered the US approximately eight months prior to the incident.
Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus suggested that the Biden administration was responsible for the tragic deaths, as Baptiste was awaiting federal immigration proceedings at the time of the stabbings. Neuhaus criticized the handling of the migrant crisis and labeled it a failure on various levels of the federal government. Baptiste is currently being held in Orange County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court.
