A group of 2,000 Ukrainian conscripts and veterans are undergoing military training in France’s eastern Marne region as part of a European Union-funded program. The training aims to prepare Ukrainian forces for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which began when Russia invaded in 2022. The French military has recreated battlefield conditions and provided equipment such as armored vehicles, howitzers, anti-tank missile units, and surface-to-air missiles for the training. The Anne of Kyiv brigade is one of the groups being trained in France before heading to Poland and then being dispatched to the front lines.

French officials have expressed the need for Ukraine to have 15 new highly trained, battle-ready brigades due to uncertainties surrounding future Western military aid, especially after the election of Donald Trump. Most of the Ukrainian trainees have recently joined the army, with an average age of 38 and some as old as 50. Despite apprehension, the trainees are determined to defend their country, viewing the conflict as a war for their existence and survival. Ukrainian Col. Dmytro Rymschyn, who leads the Anne of Kyiv brigade, expressed confidence in the brigade’s competence and belief in victory.

The trainees, many of whom were civilians, have shown rapid learning and adaptability during their training in France. After nine weeks, they are now able to repel attacks on their trenches and mount counter-attacks. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu highlighted the human element of the training, acknowledging that some trainees may lose their lives once deployed to the frontline. The French military is committed to preparing more troops in the coming months to support Ukraine in the conflict.

The Ukrainian trainees are receiving intensive training in various aspects of warfare, from combat tactics to the operation of advanced military equipment. The French military has designed the training program to closely simulate the challenges that Ukrainian forces face back home in Donbas. The Ukrainian trainees are focused on developing their skills and readiness for combat, with an emphasis on adapting to the changing dynamics of the conflict and responding effectively to enemy attacks.

The Ukrainian trainees have voiced a sense of urgency and determination to defend their country against external aggression. Despite facing the daunting prospect of combat, they remain committed to their mission and believe in the possibility of victory. The training in France has enhanced their capabilities and confidence, preparing them for the challenges ahead. As they prepare to return to Ukraine and join the fight, the trainees are poised to make a significant impact on the front lines, showcasing their skills and determination in the face of adversity.

Overall, the training program in France for Ukrainian forces reflects the ongoing support and solidarity between European nations in the face of external threats and conflicts. The collaboration between France and Ukraine underscores the shared commitment to defending democratic values and sovereignty against aggression. The Ukrainian trainees, representing a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, are united in their resolve to protect their homeland and uphold the principles of freedom and self-determination. Through their training and preparation for battle, they demonstrate their courage, resilience, and dedication to the cause of peace and security.
