Aquagga, a startup focused on destroying “forever chemicals” known as PFAS, is preparing to commercialize its technology after five years of development. Led by CEO Dhileep Sivam, the company has demonstrated its ability to eliminate 99% of PFAS in contaminated water through a series of field clean-up demos and lab tests. Sivam, with a background in technology and experience at organizations such as Intellectual Ventures and the University of Washington’s Clean Energy Institute, is passionate about working on a mission that has a positive impact on the market and the environment.

Founded in 2019 by Chris Woodruff, Brian Pinkard, and Nigel Sharp, Aquagga has raised $1.1 million from investors and secured grants and contracts totaling over $10 million. The company’s technology incorporates innovations from the University of Washington and the Colorado School of Mines, allowing them to tackle the widespread contamination of PFAS chemicals in drinking water. Aquagga’s devices have been tested at various sites, including an airport, a military base, and an industrial facility. The company plans to pursue a Series A round of funding next year to further scale their operations.

PFAS, which have been added to a wide range of products for their water-repellent properties, have become a significant environmental concern due to their persistence in the environment and harmful health effects on humans. Aquagga’s technology offers a promising solution, as it is compact, operates at lower temperatures and pressures, and can treat small PFAS compounds that are challenging to destroy. The planned commercial device, the Stampede system, utilizes high temperatures and pressures to break down PFAS into non-toxic components, making it an effective tool for water remediation projects.

In addition to its technical capabilities, Aquagga is also focused on its corporate culture and values, emphasizing the importance of social and environmental impact. Sivam, who is passionate about people management, is excited about the opportunity to lead the Aquagga team and interact with customers to understand their needs. The company’s name, a play on the extinct quagga, reflects its cooperative approach to PFAS destruction, contrasting with the competitive drive of traditional “unicorn” companies.

Aquagga is positioned to address a critical need for safe drinking water and environmental protection by offering a reliable and efficient solution for PFAS contamination. With Sivam at the helm and a dedicated team of professionals, the company is poised to make a significant impact in the market and contribute to a cleaner and healthier future for communities across the country. Aquagga’s innovative technology and commitment to sustainability make it a promising player in the clean tech industry, with the potential to revolutionize water treatment processes and address the growing issue of PFAS pollution.
