Fernando Andres Jimenez Meza, a Chilean national, is accused of shooting his girlfriend and her two teen sons in suburban New York. The incident resulted in the death of the woman’s 15-year-old son, Michael Raimondi. The mother and her other son were injured in the shooting. Jimenez Meza, who was deported twenty years ago, allegedly used an illegally possessed handgun in the attack. The girlfriend had been in an on-and-off relationship with Jimenez Meza for the past three or four years.

Following the shooting, a vigil was held for Michael Raimondi, during which he was remembered as a creative and imaginative individual. Teachers described him as having a rich interior life and a love for origami, cars, and Legos. Jimenez Meza was apprehended in Putnam Valley after a manhunt. A retired NYPD detective helped in his capture after noticing suspicious activity near her office. Jimenez Meza was found in the detective’s office where he was bitten by a police dog during his arrest.

Jimenez Meza is facing charges of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer for him as he is being held without bail at Westchester County Jail. U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the issue of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. Jimenez Meza had previously been caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally in 2004 and was deported to Mexico.

In addition to the recent shooting incident, Jimenez Meza had a history of legal issues in the U.S. In 2018, he was arrested for drunken driving and charged with assault, although details of the case are sealed. It is unclear whether local authorities were aware of his immigration status at the time. Despite being deported in the past, Jimenez Meza managed to reenter the country, leading to the tragic events in Somers, New York.

The case involving Jimenez Meza highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement and immigration authorities in dealing with individuals who are deported and reenter the country illegally. The tragic outcome of the shooting incident has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and increased scrutiny of deportees who attempt to return. The community is left mourning the loss of a young life and grappling with the aftermath of a senseless act of violence. As the legal proceedings continue, questions remain about how such tragedies can be prevented in the future.
