India has recently withdrawn its envoy to Canada along with other officials and diplomats after being named as “persons of interest” in an investigation by the Canadian government. New Delhi rejected these allegations, calling them part of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s political agenda. The Indian foreign ministry summoned the Canadian Charge d’Affaires to express its displeasure at the targeting of Indian diplomats and officials, stating that it has no faith in the Canadian government’s commitment to their security. As a result, India has decided to withdraw its officials and reserves the right to take further steps in response to Canada’s actions.

Relations between India and Canada have been strained since September 2023 when Trudeau accused Indian agents of being involved in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader. India denied these allegations and has repeatedly stated that Canada has not shared any evidence to support its claims. India believes that Canada’s actions are part of a deliberate strategy to smear India for political gains. In response, Canada pulled out more than 40 diplomats from India in October 2023, and in June, a Canadian parliamentary committee named India and China as the main foreign threats to its democratic institutions based on input from intelligence agencies.

India’s envoy in Ottawa dismissed the report as politically motivated and influenced by Sikh separatist campaigners. Trudeau has expressed hope that India would engage in discussions regarding the assassination of the separatist leader. Following Canada’s allegations, the U.S. claimed that Indian agents were involved in an attempted assassination plot of another Sikh separatist leader in New York in 2023. India expressed concern and launched an investigation into the matter. The assassination plots in Canada and the U.S. against Sikh separatist leaders have strained their relationships with India, as Western nations aim to strengthen ties with New Delhi to counter China’s global influence.

The recent withdrawal of Indian diplomats from Canada comes after a series of allegations and disputes between the two countries. India has accused Canada of targeting its officials without providing any evidence to support their claims. The ongoing tension between India and Canada highlights the challenges in their diplomatic relationship and raises concerns about potential security threats against Indian diplomats in Canada. India’s decision to withdraw its envoy reflects its lack of trust in the Canadian government’s commitment to their security.

The diplomatic row between India and Canada began with Trudeau’s accusations of Indian involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader. India has consistently denied these allegations and criticized Canada for not sharing any evidence to support their claims. The situation escalated when Canada pulled out a significant number of diplomats from India in response to New Delhi’s requests to reduce its diplomatic presence. The ongoing disputes and allegations between India and Canada underscore the complexities of international relations and the importance of open communication and collaboration in resolving conflicts.

The assassination plots against Sikh separatist leaders in Canada and the U.S. have further strained their relationships with India and raised concerns about the motivation behind these allegations. India has expressed dismay at the lack of evidence provided by Canada and has launched an investigation into the allegations made by the U.S. The diplomatic tensions between India, Canada, and the U.S. highlight the challenges of maintaining diplomatic relations in an increasingly complex global landscape. The ongoing disagreements and accusations between these countries underscore the need for transparency, accountability, and cooperation to address security threats and maintain peace and stability in the region.
