Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz recently announced that Guy Rivera and Lindy Jones have been indicted on charges related to the shooting death of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller in Far Rockway. Rivera, the suspected shooter, is facing charges of first-degree murder for homicide and attempted murder for allegedly trying to fire at an NYPD sergeant during the incident. Both defendants were also indicted on criminal possession of a weapon charges for a second weapon found in the car. Jones faces multiple gun possession charges, with Katz emphasizing the need to hold individuals accountable for attacking law enforcement.
A significant number of NYPD officers attended the court proceedings, with PBA President Patrick Hendry calling Rivera a “vicious career criminal” who never should have been on the streets. The incident occurred on March 25 when Diller saw Rivera with what appeared to be a gun. As officers approached the vehicle, Rivera allegedly shot Diller in the stomach before being apprehended. Hendry criticized the criminal justice system for failing to keep violent offenders off the streets, emphasizing the need for immediate change to prevent further attacks on law enforcement.
Katz revealed that Jones admitted in court to having shot people and faces a potential 30-year sentence for his actions. Emphasizing the danger posed by Rivera and the need for justice, Katz pushed for the defendants to be held accountable for their crimes. Both Rivera and Jones face lengthy prison sentences if convicted, with Rivera potentially facing life without parole. Officer Diller, who was posthumously promoted to Detective, First Grade, was remembered as a dedicated officer, husband, father, and son who lost his life in the line of duty.
Hendry called for judges to do their jobs in holding violent criminals accountable and preventing them from being released back onto the streets. He pledged the continued presence of police officers in courtrooms until change occurs and attacks on law enforcement cease. The courtroom was adjourned until April 16, with Rivera being held without bail due to concerns about him being a flight risk.
